Hello, hello! Welcome, ladies and gents and everything in between, to the third Guilty Greenie Confessional. In this interview series, great green bloggers get real about green guilt. Do they have any? How the heck to they deal with it? Their answers may surprise you, inspire you, and maybe even ease your own guilt a little (if you’ve got any).
I’m so very excited to introduce this next interviewee, who is a bit like a celebrity blogger to me: the lovely Ms. Ailish Lucas! She’s the gorgeous mind behind the popular and award-winning natural beauty blog, The Glow Getter. Though her site is oh-so-stylish and professional, her fun and accessible writing makes you feel like you’re her gal pal getting a low-down on all the green beauty secrets. I would recommend The Glow Getter to beginning greenies, official tree-huggers, and mainstream make-up lovers alike.
Read on to hear about this U.K. beauty expert’s guilty spa indulgences, how she uses meditation to cope, and why she’s proud of her move to New Zealand!
Q: What are three of your guiltiest (perhaps anti-green) habits or indulgences?
A: Ooh, this is a juicy one! Probably sugar and alcohol from a lifestyle perspective! I’m a sucker for sweets, so really have to try hard to limit them, but they taste so good! Champagne too, it’s just amazing! For anti-green, I would probably say beauty treatments. It’s really hard to find an organic salon, and sometimes, a girl just has to get a pedicure. So I guess that’s not green!
Q: How do you carry your guilt, if you have it? (Or, how do you avoid letting the habits you feel guilty about get you down?)
A: My family is Irish Catholic; I have a degree in guilt! I try and meditate lots, as it helps me get perspective. I actually got out of the habit of doing it for a while, ironically when I didn’t feel my best, and that’s when you need it the most! So that would be my coping mechanism. I would recommend it to everyone.
Q: Was guilt a motivating factor in your decision to dive into green beauty?
A: Not really. I wanted to start looking into beauty brands more because I’d had problematic skin for ages, and when I discovered Pai skincare it made such a difference immediately that I thought there was something in that. And then it became a blog!
Q: What’s the most recent ‘eco’ change you’ve made, small or large?
A: Moving to New Zealand. The plane ride isn’t ‘eco,’ but the lifestyle definitely is compared to London! I’ve started using a lot more household eco-friendly cleaning products too as it freaks me out thinking about what is non-eco!
Q: What change (past or recent) are you most proud of, or which was the hardest?
A: Again, I think moving to New Zealand. It’s difficult moving to another country when you’re in your 30’s. You don’t make friends as easily as you did in your 20’s. Saying that, it’s been an adventure! That’s definitely something I’m most proud of. That and climbing Kilimanjaro with whiplash from being in a car crash three days earlier.
Q: What’s currently on your green wishlist?
A: Everything from Kjaer Weis. The packaging is amazing. Oh, and the new W3ll People liquid eyeliner. Basically anything that is a green makeup brand. I’m obsessed.
Q: Lastly, just for fun, if you could travel to any nature spot in the world right now, where would that be?
A: The Iguazu falls – I’ve always wanted to go, and it’s on the list, so it will happen!
Stay tuned for the next Guilty Greenie Confessional.
